Privacy Policy — A Kinder Internet

The short version
A Kinder Internet does not have a server. It does not have accounts. It does not collect, transmit, or store anything about what you read or browse.
Every comment the extension evaluates is read by Apple Intelligence's language model running on your own device, inside Safari. The text never leaves your Mac, iPhone, or iPad — not to us, not to Apple, not to anyone. There is nothing for us to sell, share, leak, or hand over, because there is nothing for us to receive.
The rest of this policy explains that in detail, and covers the two places where limited information does exist: your purchase (handled entirely by Apple) and our website.
Who we are
A Kinder Internet is made by Ranger Technologies Ltd. ("Ranger Technologies", "we", "us"). This policy covers the "A Kinder Internet" Safari extension and its companion app for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, together with the A Kinder Internet website (together, the "App").
This policy applies only to A Kinder Internet. Ranger Technologies' other products are governed by their own privacy policies.
What the extension does with the pages you visit
To decide whether a comment is abusive, the extension has to read it. Here is exactly what happens when it does:
1. The extension reads the text of comments and replies on the page you are viewing.
2. That text is passed to Apple Intelligence's on-device language model (Apple's FoundationModels framework), which runs locally on your device.
3. The model returns a verdict — a category and a severity — and the extension hides the comment or leaves it alone.
The comment text exists only in your device's memory for the moment it takes to reach a verdict. It is not written to a file, not sent over the network, and not retained afterward. The extension makes no network requests of any kind. It has no server to talk to.
The extension requests broad site access so that it can work on comment sections wherever you find them, including the third-party comment widgets embedded in news articles. Broad access is what lets it read comments on any site; it is not used to observe, record, or report your browsing.
What is stored on your device
The App keeps a small amount of data in Safari's local extension storage, on your device only. None of it is transmitted anywhere.
Your settings — whether filtering is on, your filter strength, and which sites you have switched it off for.
A verdict cache — so a comment you have already scrolled past is not re-evaluated. This cache stores a hash of the comment paired with its verdict. It does not store the comment's text, its author, the page it appeared on, or when you saw it. A hash cannot be turned back into the original comment.
Counters — how many comments have been hidden today and in total, shown to you in the extension's popup, and a daily count used to enforce the free tier's limit.
All of it is yours and stays on your device. Deleting the App removes it.
What we collect
Nothing, in the ordinary course of using the App. There is no account to create, no email address to give us, no sign-in, no telemetry, no crash reporting, no analytics SDK, and no advertising identifier. We do not know who our users are, how many comments you have hidden, or which sites you visit.
There are three narrow exceptions, none of which involve your browsing:
1. If you email us. If you contact us for support or with a question, we receive whatever you put in that email — typically your email address and the contents of your message. We use it to answer you, and we keep it only as long as needed for that purpose and for our own records of support issues.
2. If you buy a subscription. See below.
3. If you visit our website. See below.
Purchases and subscriptions
A Kinder Internet offers a paid subscription through the Apple App Store. Apple processes the purchase, not us. We never see or receive your payment card, billing address, Apple Account credentials, or any other payment information. Apple's handling of that information is governed by Apple's own privacy policy.
Your subscription status is checked on your device, using StoreKit's record of your current entitlements. The App asks your device the question "is this subscription active?" and gets a yes or no locally. That answer never leaves the device, and we are not told when or whether you subscribe on an individual basis.
Apple provides us with aggregate, anonymized sales and subscription reporting — totals by region and period. It does not identify you.
Manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple Account settings; we cannot do that for you, and we have no record to delete.
Apple Intelligence
The App relies on Apple Intelligence's on-device model. Filtering only works when Apple Intelligence is available and enabled on your device; when it is not, the App tells you plainly rather than silently doing nothing.
Because the model runs on-device, your comment text is not sent to Apple's servers by this App. Your use of Apple Intelligence generally is governed by Apple's terms and privacy policy.
Our website
Our website, www.akinderinternet.com is separate from the App. It uses no cookies and no analytics / privacy-preserving. We do not run advertising, behavioral retargeting, or third-party marketing trackers on it, and we do not build profiles of visitors.
If you sign up for a mailing list or contact form on the website, we use the address you give us for that purpose only, and every email includes an unsubscribe link.
What we share
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or marketing partners. We have never done so and the App is built in a way that gives us nothing to sell to a third party etc..
We would disclose information only where we are legally compelled to — a valid court order, subpoena, or equivalent legal process — or where necessary to protect someone's safety or to establish or defend legal claims. In practice, a demand for your browsing or reading history could not be satisfied: we do not have it, and we cannot obtain it from your device.
If Ranger Technologies is ever involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information we hold may transfer as part of that transaction.
International users and data transfers
Because the App does not transmit your information to us, there is no cross-border transfer of your reading or browsing data — it stays on your device, wherever you are.
Earlier versions of Ranger Technologies' policies referenced the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework. That framework was invalidated in 2020 and no longer provides a valid transfer mechanism; we do not rely on it. We handle personal information in line with the GDPR and UK GDPR, Canada's PIPEDA, and applicable U.S. state privacy laws including the CCPA/CPRA.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have rights to access, correct, delete, port, or restrict the processing of your personal information, and to object to certain processing. You also have the right not to be discriminated against for exercising them.
For anything held on your device, you can exercise these rights yourself and immediately: change your settings in the extension popup, or delete the App to erase everything it has stored.
For the limited information we hold — support correspondence and mailing list subscriptions — write to us at the address below and we will respond within 30 days. Please tell us what you are asking for and the email address you contacted us from, so we can find the right records.
Children
A Kinder Internet is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Given that the App collects no personal information from anyone, this is largely academic — but if you believe a child has provided us information through our website or by email, contact us and we will delete it.
Parents and guardians should note that the App attempts to hide abusive comments; it is not a parental control, does not block adult or explicit material, and should not be relied on as a child-safety product.
Security
The App's strongest security property is architectural: information that is never collected cannot be breached. Your comment text is never transmitted, and your settings and counters never leave your device, where they are protected by your device's own security and encryption.
For the limited information we do hold, we maintain reasonable administrative and technical safeguards against loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, and we transmit it over encrypted connections. No system can be guaranteed absolutely secure, and we cannot promise perfect security — but the scope of what could ever be exposed is deliberately kept close to nothing.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version always lives at akinderinternet.com/privacy, with the "Last Updated" date at the top. If we make a material change — in particular, if we ever begin collecting information we do not collect today — we will say so prominently on our website and in the App before the change takes effect.
